Dec. 14, 2006Storer Elementary, 4th GradeMrs. Gillentine’s ELP Class Presentation on Chinese ProverbsYe-gong the Dragon Lover In ancient China, there was a gentleman by the name of Ye-gong. Ye-gong was famous for his love of dragons. He claimed to his friends and neighbors that he loved dragons more than anyone else. To support his claim, he decorated his whole house with dragons. The posts of his bed were engraved with dragons, the pillars of his house were engraved with dragons, his tables and chairs were painted with dragons, even the rings on his door shaped like two flying dragons. When the real dragon in heaven heard about Ye-gong’s story, he was very pleased. He decided to visit Ye-gong one morning. After arriving at Ye-gong’s house, however, he realized that his body was too big to fit in the door. Consequently, he could only peep into the house from the windows while half of his body remained outside Ye-gong’s front yard. The noise from the sky startled Ye-gong who was still in bed that morning. Coming out of the bed and looking out of the window, Ye-gong saw the smiling face of a dragon so big and gross that he was scared and ran back into his room trying to hide under the bed.A Chinese proverb was born of this story--Ye-gong hao long. It is often used to criticize those whose words and action do not match.
